Failed to connect to WMI and DCOM errors

$

Not sure if I'm asking this in the correct place, but here we go.

We monitor dfs replication using a script that runs dfsrdiag, and it has been failing with "Failed to connect to WMI Services on computer %RemoteComputerName%", if you check the System event log, when this fails there is a DCOM error 10028 "DCOM was unable to communicate with the computer %RemoteComputerName% using any of the configured protocols; requested by PID 10c8 (C:\Windows\system32\dsfrdiag.exe)

The computer that the script is running on is a Server 2012 R2 DC/file server. It has no FSMO roles. The far end server is a 2008 R2 file server. Neither server can communicate in this manner with each other. They are able to ping each other (on different sites/subnets), Windows firewalls are disabled and all traffic is permitted across the hardware firewalls in place.

If I reboot the 2012 server, I am able to successfully run the dfsrdiag command for a short period before it starts failing again. Please can someone point me in the right direction to get this fixed, I've not yet found anything that will resolve this issue.

2008R2 - File Server Resource Manager Quotas - Can't reset peak usage

I just implemented Quotas using File Server Resource Manager in Server 2008R2 for user folders.  I auto applied the quota to all subfolders of a folder.  I have a user who was over their limit, but has since removed a bunch of data and is now well under their limit.  FSRM still shows that the users peak usage is at 28GB when it's only at 150MB.  When I right click the user and try to reset the peak usage, nothing happens.  They are unable to save any documents to the their user folder.

read only issues on a folder

i have windows server 2008r2 sp1. im experiencing a strange behavior.

i have a folder (not shared) with full access permissions to a local user and a domain user.

in both users the behavior is as follows:

1. i can create new files and folders in that folder

2. i cant modify existing files!

3. when i remove the "read only" attribute checkbox from the folder properties window i can modify existing files but this reversed after 3 days or so automatically somehow

4. i tried to check the "replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object" in the "advanced security settings" for that folder (after making sure my user has full access permissions to that folder)

has anyone came across this kind of issue?

thanks

AD LDS Instance - Getting Event 4013 "Duplicate UNIX GID entries"?

$

Hello everyone,

I'm trying to set-up a Server for NFS with AD LDS. I was able to follow all steps and mount a folder once successfully, but then more tests were done so, somehow I was not able to mount a folder again in UNIX.

I went to the event logs to try and find more information and there it was, according to UNIX I have duplicate GID entries, although I do not know where does it think I have that, if I only have one group as you can see in the image.

If I delete the group, the error goes away but i still cannot mount folders as I have to add the groups from UNIX as r technet's document: (can't include links)

I was wondering if somebody had an idea of how to confirm this or prevent Windows from seeing those duplicate entries?

Or in case there's really duplicates how can I get rid of them?

By the way, I wanted to include the image but I'm not verified yet) from ADSI Edit, I have two default naming context (one for the actual name of server and another for localhost) could these be the issue? Someone told me this was normal because it's two different ways of contacting the server. And if so could someone please tell me how to get rid of one.

Note: I'll get an image uploaded as soon as my account is verified.

Thanks in advance for the assistance.

Hi, I had few window 2003 server which are a having the DFS roles running and there is a source are installed File and Storage Services (Windows 2012) and replication are running. All the win 2003 server are replica.

We are planning to perform the migration for the existing 2003 to 2012.

What is the Prework we need to do on the source server? Stop the replication?

And what is the plan for the new server?Backup and restore the DFS config?

Any DFS expert here?

Moving VSS storage from multiple volumes to single volume

I've been searching the web and have not been able to find a solid answer. Here is what I need to do

We have a file server that has 3 drives (E,F,G). I have been getting High IO alerts when backups have been running lately. I found the best practices article that states moving the copies to another volume can resolve these problems. So now my question:

If I created an H drive on the server with sufficient space, could I move the storage for the VSS on E,F, and G to the H drive? If so, how would access and aging be handled? would there be any issues restoring files via VSS using this method?

Powershell Script to find files from an SQL query

Hi Guys,

Sorry if this does not make sense...

A bit of background first, I have a software which runs off a SQL Server. The software will send windows objects such as docx and msgs to Windows directory folder on the same or separate server; an entry is made in the SQL database with a guid to show that an object has been stored and can be located by the software.

I wish to delete a large number of theses files, I would like to locate the files on the Storage server with Powershell but my selection needs to be based on an SQL query so that I can select items based on row values.

Has anyone managed to achieve this before?

Remove disk from storage pool without adding a new one

Hi, I have a storage pool consisting of 5 drives. One of the drives is getting old and I want to remove it.

I have marked the disk as retired.

However when i try to remove it it says that not all data could be relocated even tho I have enough free space on the remaining drives.

How do I migrate the data from the retired drive to the other drives so that I can remove it?

I don't want to add a new disk at this time.

File service only accept connections from 127.0.0.1

I have been scratching my head for few days on below problem.

I have a Windows 2012 server, it started to accept connections only from loopback address. It did not even accept its only IP address.

For example, I cannot browse the share using UNC path \\servername\share or IP address \\192.168.0.1\share.

But \\127.0.0.1\share is working ok.

I know this seems a firewall or antivirus blocking the ports, but there are no such software running. In fact, I removed every software on the server. But it still the same.

Now I see the server only accepting TCP connections for port 53, 135, 139, 389. Other ports like 445 cannot go through.

I run the best practice scan on the server and don't see abnormals.

If I run troubleshooting on network connections, it says security or firewall settings might be blocking the connection. This message doesn't help much.

Appreciate any thoughts.

DFS Namespace on Azure VM and Azure Client VPN

$

Hi All,

I've created a new DFS namespace (\\company.local\Public) on Windows Server 2012 R2 in Microsoft Azure. As a reference I have used the following blog post: http://clemmblog.azurewebsites.net/high-available-file-share-in-windows-azure-using-dfs/

The next step was to connect a (domain joined) laptop to the Azure virtual network using the Azure VPN client. After connecting I can browse to the file servers and the shares that are present on the file servers but when I try to browse to the shares in the DFS namespace (\\company.local\Public\Data) I get the following error:

But when I ping the namespace (company.local) I get a reply.

I can also use Remote Desktop to connect to servers in my environment with the Azure VPN client active, it all falls apart when I try to browse to the dfs share. At the moment we're kinda lost for ideas so any hints or tips are welcome :)

P.S. I have configured DFSN to use the FQDN for use with workgroup machines.

DFS Stops Replication between servers

Hi All,

From last couple of weeks i am experiencing some issues with our DFS environment, data between two servers doesn't replicate to each other.

Like, i have 2 servers, S1 and S2, S1 is primary server and S2 is secondary server. So all users hits on S1 and make changes in files or create new files/folders then entire all modified/new files gets replicate to S2 server.

But all of sudden replication gets stop and no modified/new files get replicate to S2 server. I checked all even logs but don't find any event in which i can see any information about this issue. Even when i run backlog command to check backlogs, it gets stuck and doesn't give any output.

Can someone please help me to fix it permanently. Because the workaround which i am using right now is Reboot both servers.

~Ashley

Hello,

The replication DFSR between two members doesn't work.

No entry in the Eventviewer.

DFSRdiag /replicationstate: 0 entries

No entries in dfsrdiag /backlog

Propagation Report indicate that the receiving member is in pending arrival

No Antivirus software installed

Outgoing connections generated by dfsr are in Established state

KB2761922 et KB3002288 are installed and VMTools are updated.

When i restart the service DFSR, the replication works until tomorrow and stop working again.

Could you please help me ?

Best Regards

Storage Spaces - Virtual Disk Repair finishes Immediately but stays degraded

Have seen several other people with this issue.  Is there something that I am missing?  Had a disk fail, replaced it following the guidelines laid out.  The virtual disk will not repair, repair finishes in 1 second and the virtual disk stays in the degraded state.

NTFS permissions set on the folder at DFS folder target level don't apply to that folder (but to go to child objects)

Two 2012 R2 DFS servers. One replication group. Namespace folder target is pointed to a folder one deep from the drive root - let's call it 'Shared'.

I made an NTFS permissions change at that 'Shared' folder level which should have replicated to the other DFS server. Instead, the permissions changed for all child object (files and folders) that were inheriting from that parent but NOT at the parent level itself. (i.e. NTFS perms at the 'Shared' folder level on the receiving member did not change but all child object inheriting permissions did get the change)

Is this by design? If so, can someone point me to a whitepaper?

Reporting on FIles by date

I have been asked to create a task that will look at a folder and report via email to a user that there are files in that folder with and age 4 hrs or less and files 1 week or less. I was told to use FSRM but I cannot seem to understand how to do this. Is this the right too or not. if it is then how do I do this and if not what should I use? thanks

Using Robocopy with MOT and Logging to different file daily.

$

Hi all,
I have a robocopy question.
I'm running robocopy as a service doing a continuous copy using the /MOT:1 option to check for changes each minute.
I'm also appending the status to a log file with date stamp in it /LOG+:c:\%date:~6,4%-%date:~3,2%-%date:~0,2%-robocopy.log
This successfully creates a log file such as "2015-06-10-robocopy.log" however unless I stop and start the robocopy service, it keeps logging to the same logfile never changing the date.
Does anyone know how I can log to a daily logfile but keep the service running? I don't really want to restart the service each day.
Any help much appreciated.

The Backup runs succesfully however, as does any backup that i run with Backup Exec 2010 on the same server (running these backups also causes these same errors in the Event Log).

The only oher fix i found out in the wild that even remotely gets near these errors is this one:

http://allfaq.org/forums/t/156203.aspx

I tried this but it simply stopped the backups from working at all.

Any ideas anyone?

Many thanks all.

Folder redirection issue

We recently implemented folder redirection at the County and it has worked very smoothly with a minimum of problems. However, we have one individual that has an issue I haven't been able to work through.

Each time the user logs on, it's as if it's the first time they've logged in using folder redirection.  They are an officer, so they have a lot of pictures and reports, so their files are in the neighborhood of 14gb.  From login to desktop takes over an hour each time.  The files are on the server.  I've had them log in on another computer, but it doesn't recognize their files.

Their computer is Windows 8.1.  We have many other 8.1's that work fine.

Any ideas?

Thank you.
