Reattach iSCSI to a new Windows Server

$

Evening!

I was wondering... We have a windows 2008 R2 enterprise server running our backup software. Which stores it into an iSCSI.

Due to an unfortunate series of events. This server has went down and, it's simple for us to put up another windows server and install our backup software. What i'm worried about is the reattachment of the iSCSI, will it connect correctly and see all of our backup data?

Please advise!

Thank you!

DFSR and nightly resyncs

$

We have an odd issue which has recently started. We have 4 offices connected using DFSR replicating 1,300,000 files. We recently replaced 2 older servers with 2012 standard boxes with two other 2003r2 servers still in place. Everything has worked for 1-2 months however in the last week every night the DFS decides to run some kind of consistency check and I will see a backlog of 1,300,000 files waiting to go from one server to all of the others. The backlog appears every night at 1AM.

So far I have:

Disabled Sophos on the member that generates the backlog

Backup finishes by 21.30

Nothing in the event viewer around this time

No server reboots or updates during this time.

Checking the debug logs, at midnight we start to generate approx 26 debug logs per minute (so I am assuming this is when it starts)

Below is the last log entry before it starts flooding the log with the RefreshRecord entries:

W2K12 Deduplication [Reading Performance]

Hi,

I've just installed a new 2012 DC server which is going to hold Veeam Backups.

So I've created a storage pool around 8TB and created a new volume with deduplication enabled but here comes the issue, my reading speed just dropped for about 85% ( I was around 800MB/s and currently have only 110-140MB/s left... ), what's weird is that my writing speed isn't impacted at all.

The server is clean (no software installed, nothing on the new volume).

If anyone knows what happened, it would be great help!

Best Regards,

Ludovic

Not enough space to complete operation

Hi,

Im using windows 2008 server on Dell PowerVault NX. Some weeks ago I installed 4 new hard drives. Added to existing raid, and i was able to see them in disk manager (3,7 TB unallocated space), but problems started when i tried to extend partition and I cant make new simple volume also, even if I using 100 MB for volume or 1 TB, i get same error.

I cant add images and links, because my account is not verified, so error was - there is not available space on disk(s) to complete this operation.

I tried to extend partition using diskpart, but same result. Even i tried to use some software, but no results, some of them not showing that unollacated space, I think because is dynamic disk, and some of them do not allow to use that space.

Partition that needs to be extended is - 5,5 TB dynamic disk and 3,7 TB unallocated space.

Thanks!

DFSR Replication Group missing in action

We have DFSR running between win 2003R2 and Win2008std.
The Hub is a win2008 server and we have 9 spokes. The problem started when i noticed that the topology showed that 1 member was disconnected.
The server was read/write configured but the DFS Management only showed the path from the hub to the spoke and not the spoke to het hub.
I added the spoke path with the following command: dfsradmin conn new /rgname:"Profile Replication" /SendMem:server.domain /RecvMem:server.domain /ConnEnabled:true
The connection was made but at the same point the hub server lost connection with the replication group. I removed the replication group from display and tried to re-add it. The replication group is no longer to find.
I removed the member that i added the path from but the replication group did not return. After browsing the net for ages and checking for a way to solve it i decided to ask here for some idea's.
When i check, in dfs management, the namespace replication is states Profiles: The replicated folder object can not be queried. The replication group Profile Replication cannot be found.
When i check on the win2008 spokes the replication group is still available on the win2003 spokes the replication group is not available. I ran a healthreport against the hub server and that runs without errors.
Used the command --> dfsradmin health new /rgname:"Profile Replication" /refmemname:domain\hubSERVER /domain:domain.local /ReportName:hubSERVERreport-%DDMMYYYY%%HHMM% <--

Anyone some ideas or maybe needs/wants some more info?

Thanks in advance,
André

Hi

I created one shared folder in Windows server 2008 R2. Under the main folder i created four sub folders & given different access to those folders.

For Example

In Sub folder 1 - Design Dept have full access & Quality dept have read access

In Design dept there are four users, each one created one sub folder as their project name & take share & working.

User 1 created one folder & put their project files & the same can't able to access by user 2. Like that every users are facing problem.

Kindly give the solution

Thanks

Quick file server rundown

Hey guys,

I'm working with a file server and I'm mostly a network guy. I need a quick rundown of exactly how exclusive and read/only access works with a file.

When a file is opened a hidden file is created with a ~ character in front of it. Is this a lock file which stops access by anyone else? Also how does the applications know to open just a read-only file?

I did some searching and I can't find a real good rundown which explains mutual and exclusive access to folders. Information about session and open file sessions would be great too.

I need this as fast as possible!

Thanks a lot guys!

DFS Replication - Can it act like a back up ?

DFS Replication - Can it act like a back up ?  If the data in the primary location gets deleted I beleive that it would remove the data from the replcaition site as well. But is there way to avoid this and just keep adding new data but not remove/delete data from the replication site. Thanks for your time.

Fatal Error by using File Server Migration Tool

Hello,

we would like to migrate a single Windows 2003 R2 SP 2 (32bit) File Server to another FileServer-Cluster running Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise SP 1 with the MS FileServer Migration Tool.

We created 2 shares on top of each of the source HDDs. One share migrated without any problems. By migrating the second one, we always get this fatal error:

Hi. On my File server i have two raid: 1 for system and 10 for data.

I recently noticed that came fake volume Y, and i am not udersantand from where it comes??? And for any folder into this volume I can't set share access.

This networking location can't be included because it is not indexed

Hi All

I've seen a few threads here with this problem but have been unable to find a decent solution for my situation.

We're migrating from Server 2003 to 2008.  Right now everyone has a roaming profile which we are phasing out due to redirection being much more efficient for us.

I've created a share on the 2008 server (D:\User Shares) to host user personal folders and of course, when I try to add \\server\usershare\username to the documents library on the client I receive the indexing error.

I have installed the indexing service, created a catalogue, and indexed both the User Shares root folder as well as the user folder itself for my test user to no avail.

I've read about using symbolic links, but as these are for user shares, I'm not much interested in creating these links on every client PC.

Is there a better way to do this?

Thanks!

Ryan

File Server Data Synchronization

Hello,

Quick question, hoping for a answer. I am currently looking into replicating approximately 350 GB of data from file server A to file server B at a collocation site. I have performed my initial copy with Rich Copy and X copy successfully. I am looking for a way to synchronize changes from file server A over to file server B every night at the close of business. I have looked at DFS-R, setup it and tested it. I am not very confident in it, because this files server is only using 350GB of hdd, but it has appro. 420,000 files. (Lots of scanning and checking)

Is DFS-R the way to go? Has anyone had success with DFS-R synchronizing a file system of this size or larger? Other there other Microsoft alternatives? Thanks in advance.

Share Migration to new Server 2012 system

We're planning to replace our principal Windows 2008 R2 file server with new hardware. We're installing Serer 2012 on the new server. Our existing file server data is stored on an HP LeftHand SAN and we connect over iSCSI. We thought we could plug the existing iSCSI connections into the new server but can't figure out the easiest way to get the share information over. Is there a good best practice for a migration such as ours?

DFSR Propagation Tests Fail

I run propagation tests/reports from  each DFSR servers once a week to insure the health of our DFSR environment.  Recently the propagation reports keep coming back with errors, and it's the same error and server causing them on every report.  That server name is FILE1.  All propagation tests are initiated from FILE1, but they aren't all tests of FILE1.  If the propagation test is for FILE1, I don't get any errors.  If the report is for another server, it always comes back with the error below.

Error: Member File1.domain.local : Cannot read values from WMI provider on the member. WMI query Select * from DfsrIdRecordInfo where ReplicatedFolderGuid = "05662022-3646-4AB5-A15D-C1A26A027C69" AND Fid = 562949953427650 failed. Not found (Error code 0x80041002)

DFS Namespace folders disappear and reappear

$

Hello, I have the following setup.  A Windows 2012 server running DFS with a single namespace that contains 4 folders.

When my Windows 7 clients connect to \\domain.local\namespace, the 4 folders are listed with a shortcut arrow on the icon.  They are able to access the folders without a problem.

However, after a while and usually random, 3 of the folders will not be listed and the one that remains does not have have the shortcut arrow.  Its always the same folder that remains.  Sometimes the 4 folders will randomly come back after a while and have the shortcut arrows and users are able to access the contents.

Anyone know how I can resolve this?

Thanks
