RoboCopy Job File Analysis

$

Hi,

This is a job file I brewed up over several months to backup my win 8.1 PC nightly.  Being retired, I'm sadly disconnected from my colleagues in IT, and at this point, in need of another set of eyes.

THE QUESTION:  Does the following job do everything I need to enable restoration ofmy precious data in the event of total loss ?  I've tried to exclude unnecessary (useless) data.   There is also a logical use of /R:2 /W:2 which I have not researched.

This is an excerpt of the Run Log, and thank you for your kind attention.    -ss

Large number of open file handles on fileserver (Server 2012R2) after user's rds session has long been terminated through log off

Hi,

we do have an rds farm with roaming profiles (not profile disks) consisting of 6 terminal servers ("srvts001" to "srv006" 2012 R2), 2 domain controllers ("srvdc01", "srvdc02" 2012 R2), 1 SQL/Fileserver ("srvsql01" 2012 R2).

Roaming profiles are stored on srvsql01 in share RDS. Oplocks are disabled, directory caching is disabled.

Everything was running without problems for 1 or 2 years. Recently (about 2 weeks ago) users began complaining about being logged on with a temporary profile. Investigation showed a lot of open file handles from previous (no longer existing) sessions on the file server.

E.g. user1 had logged on to rds one day and logged off in the evening (not just disconnected, really logged off) and when he logs in the other day on the rds farm he is logged on with a temporary profile due to the profile service being unable to access the roaming profile as it is (event log) "in use by another process".

Looking at the fileserver's open files we can see that a lot of files of that user profile (and of other users, too!) are shown as open - all with read option and no apparent locks.

When user1 loggs off these locks stay! Manually closing the open files on the file server allows the user to log on to the rds servers normally. Subsequent logging off may or may not create those stale open file handles.

We have no clue as to when these enormous amount of open file handles (we talk about 100s of files per user) happen. It seems to be at random and not hitting every user.

Has anyone ever met a similar problem? Or at least an idea on how to prevent logged off users to still have open files on the file server?

Any answer pointing in the direction of a possible solution or source of this problem is greatly appreciated!

Server 2012 DFS Replication error loop on one of pair of DFS Servers on one volume only - 2106 -> 2212 -> 2104

hi there.

bit of background:

pair of dedicated DFS servers with DFS Namespace for file shares, mostly mapped to drive letters via GP.

Both Servers, Server 2012 (not R2)

Some folders were either n0t setup with replication or the replication failed a long time ago and I'm currently carrying out remedial work on these folders to bring them into correct functionality (two working folder targets and working replication etc)

I followed the guide here - http://blogs.technet.com/b/askds/archive/2010/09/07/replacing-dfsr-member-hardware-or-os-part-2-pre-seeding.aspx

I used Windows Server Backup to pre-seed the folder onto the 2nd DFS server, set up the referrals, folder targets and replication and then sat back and waited for the initial seed delta to copy and the backlog to reduce to 0.

I got the event log saying initial replication was successful and everything was grand.

We then created a test GPO to push out this particular drive via its DFS Namespace to some test users and everything was fine.

I then asked my test users to start using it in anger, copying files to it, hard deleting those files etc. (we had issues last year with DFS Namespace mapped drives disspearing from Explorer, fixed with a TRIM hotfix that was affecting all servers)

at this point one of my test users used a script .exe file that writes files automatically to the drive.

Its at this point that I start getting 2106 -> 2212 -> 2104 errors on DFS1. I remove his script folder completely from both servers but its still occuring.

I've ran chkdsk on the volume but its found no errors.

Everything I've found so far to this loop only relates to 2008 R2 (eg. https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/f9ff1d3d-833a-4279-bf2e-a9624ba1c40a/dfsr-event-id-2212-2106-and-2104-loop-after-moving-server-from-different-hyperv-farm?forum=winserverfiles )

This article says that I should see different behavior and events 2218 and 2220, but I've not seen them:

http://blogs.technet.com/b/filecab/archive/2012/11/12/dfs-replication-improvements-in-windows-server-2012.aspx

I'm now wondering 'why' it broke, and whether the automated database rebuild will actually work (doesn't look like it) and what my next step should be?

(I have two shares on this particular volume, one i fixed and one still waiting to be fixed but is currently being mapped via standard \\unc rather than dfs namespace)

File server with mounted and normal disks recommendations

Take a look at this server disks configuration

The customer wants to add 15 more disks, and mount them. A total of 1210 GB more

Any recommendations? I just fear it will eventually break down with all these disk on it, and a heavy load because of home folders and profiles and application data stored on the server

This is a 2012 R2 server, so i was hoping to take in use new features or something. This is a very old way of thinking probably

Unable to see shared using servername

Hello,

I recently have an issue with mapping drives using the server name.

If I map a user with \\servername\share_name the user cant see the files or folders on that share, however when I map it via \\The.Server.IP.Address\share_name the files and folders enumerate just fine.

I can tell that this is not a permission issue because he can access it just fine via IP. Also, i could not conclude if its a DNS issue because when trying to ping the servername it resolves to the The.Server.IP.Address, and i couldn't figure out whats going on.

I can also confirm that the host file of the workstation has no mapping to the servername and is in the default configuration.

For now, i just ip them via IP.

DFS Replication overlap on 2003 R2 Domain controllers

$

I am having an issue with replication issues for a DFS namespace I have shared between two server 2003 R2 Domain controllers.  I am receiving Event ID 6402:

Event Type:    Error
Event Source:    DFSR
Event Category:    None
Event ID:    6402
Date:        7/16/2015
Time:        11:44:12 AM
User:        N/A
Computer:    <DC1>
Description:
The DFS Replication service failed to initialize replicated folder D:\DFSShares\<DEPT_A> because the service detected that one of its private folders overlaps with an existing File Replication service (FRS) replica set. This is an unsupported configuration.

Additional Information:
Overlapped Folder: \\.\D:\DFSShares\<DEPT_A>
Replicated Folder: D:\DFSShares\<DEPT_A>
Replicated Folder Name: <DEPT_A>

Replication Group ID: F26A08B9-40DA-467E-9737-6E414F2ABD5F
Member ID: 7BD0FE29-E9DD-4F2F-8787-20E3AF29DFCA
FRS Folder Name:D:\DFSShares\<DEPT_A>
FRS AD Subscriber Object ID: 17A9D16C-9A16-4266-8FCB-6DF756DE526C

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

I would like to continue to replicate this namespace through DFS, but cannot find instruction how to disable and remove entries for this folder for FRS replication.  This being a domain controller I can't disable FRS...

I have seen this post:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/05eaf591-9089-4d58-b7e7-06c38155cd90/dfs-and-file-replication-service-on-windows-2003-r2-server?forum=winserverfiles

but the resolution does not work for me.  the "<DEPT_A> folder is listed, but is showing as replicating (it has the blue circle on it's icon) and it lists the paths for the root targets and "enabled" in DFS Referral column.

Currently the folder is not replicating and I need to get it working as this is an often used resource for both locations.  Any suggestions or assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Hi All,

Am using windows server 2008R2 as File server (Virtual Server). shares and home folders has been configured in that server for all Domain users.

now planning to migrate (Move) to physical server which is purchased recently with windows server 2008 R2. How to migrate all shares and folders with Permissions (Security Group used for access level) without breaking UNC path as well.

Please note that NO DFS configured.

Possible to do the migration without any downtime? Kindly advise

Hi

I read VHDX eliminates requirement for pass-through disks

On Windows 2012 R2 host tested  guest machines I have no problem implementing either, I wonder if you answer few points:

Can I run Guest OS & File Data on the same VHDX?  Data=Files will be user home directory pictures whole MS Office 2013 files

Can I run Guest OS & SQL dB on the same VHDX?

Many thanks in advance.

Server 2012 shared folders available offline

$

Good afternoon

We have a windows 2012 standard server which at present is having issues with file searches, not finding files that can be seen present in the windows explorer search. The index has been rebuilt but this has not helped.

Another workaround this issue is to make the folder that is trying to be searched available offline and index the offline files to see if this helps. However I cannot see the option to make a folder available offline, would someone be able to tell me how to do this?

The server has the file and storage services role partially installed, with the Storage services and the File and iSCSI service file server feature installed.

Due to this causing problems and frustration for users, assistance in this matter would be appreciated.

DFSR Member not SENDING data (Receiving fine)

I have a 5 node hub\spoke DFSR environment with Windows 2012 server. I have 8 replication groups, 7 of which are working perfect. One of the replication groups (I will call it RG1) is having an issue where ONE SPOKE SERVER (we will call it "Server2") it is RECEIVING data, but is not SENDING data. The rest of the servers (3 additional spokes and one hub server I will call "Server1") are working fine. I need to get this back in sync. This has become a desperate situation. I do not show any issues in the event logs related to this. I have rebooted, removed and re-added replication connections to no avail. My thoughts on getting this in sync was this:

  1. "Server2" has what I would consider the authoritative copy (most updated out of all servers) so I will mark him as "isprimary = true"
  2. Start with DISABLING the broken hub server "Server1" server from RG1
  3. poll ad on all servers and make sure this change is replicated
  4. Re-Enable the HUB server "Server1"

My hopes with the events above is to have the HUB server "Server1" try and retrieve all the updated data from Server2 because Server2 is "PRIMARY"

Can someone tell me if this is the right process for getting replication back in sync? If not, what should I be doing to get this working again?

Mirror one storage space to another with active failover?

$

I am looking to determine whether or not windows server 2012R2 storage spaces natively supports Mirroring of either one storage space to another or one disk created on Storage Space A to another disk created on Storage Space B.  The situation is we have a client using Datacore who has two P2000 SAN's.  The Datacore boxes are set up in a cluster like configuration and handle the storage layer all the virtual machine live on. Datacore is configured to mirror one SAN to the other and should allow for resources to function normally in the event one SAN dies.  They would like to move away from Datacore and use native windows server capabilities. The ideal scenario I am trying to achieve is converting the two Datacore boxes into scale out file servers, converting the SAN's to SAS JBOD's (Not sure if this is possible but lets assume it is), Creating two storage pools with one disk each (One storage pool then disk on top of storage pool per SAN, segregating disks per SAN) then serving the storage to the hyper-v servers and VMM through a continuously available SMB3 share.  I have done this in a lab network but i can't seem to figure out how to, or if its even possible to, provide the client with the same level of redundancy they are achieving now.  In order to do this I would need to then mirror one disk or storage pool (Or SAN) to the other disk or storage pool to protect against a single SAN failure. Is this achievable with storage spaces, and if it is in the event of a SAN (OR POOL/DISK) failure will the failover to the replication SAN (Or POOL/DISK) be automatic or manual.  Lastly if this is not achievable through storage spaces can it be coupled with another native feature like Hyper-V replica, or Storage replica (though it seems this is only available in server 2016).  Any guidance or recommendations would be great, I will continue digging to determine if i can convert the P2000's to SAS connected JBOD's. I would be happy to provide any follow up information as this is a rather complex scenario. Have a lot of clients using storage spaces with Scale out files servers but i haven't yet attempted to provide a client with JBOD redundancy.

If my above ideal scenario is completely off the basic question is how can I provide the client uninterrupted service in the event that a JBOD/SAN goes down with native windows server 2012R2 features.

Virtual Machine VHDX being removed

I have been having a strange occurrence:

Host Running windows Server 2012R2 using storage spaces for the volume hosting VHDX files

Host Volume has never experienced any chkdsk errors

Gen 2 VM Running windows server 2012R2 with a D: attached through a SCSI Controller

Virtual machine will loose any visibility to its D: (Does not show in disk manager or diskpart) even though it shows as been attached in hyper-v

Virtual machine shows the following errors:

The IO operation at logical block address 0x640a58 for Disk 1 (PDO name: \Device\00000043) was retried.  This one is shown repeatedly then eventually"Disk 1 has been surprise removed"

Rebooting the VM brings the disk back online and visible in the VM, after running chkdsk Bitmap errors are returned which i am able to resolve with a chkdsk /f

This has happened 3 times in the past couple months.  What could be the cause, I cannot find anything that relates to a VM loosing complete visibility to its' vhdx file.  All storage is local on the host where the VM lives (No SMB share, no possibility of this being network related)

Server 2012 R2 File Server Stops Responding to SMB Connections

$

Hi There,

Massive shot in the dark here but I am struggling with a pretty major issue atm.  We have a production file server that is hosted on the following:

Dell MD 3220i -> iSCSI -> Server 2008 R2 Hyper-v Cluster -> Passthrough Disk -> Server 2012 R2 File Server VM

Essentially 3 times now, roughly a month or so apart.  The file server stops accepting connections.  During this time, the server is perfectly accessible through rdp or with a simple ping.  I can browse the files on the server directly but no-one appears to be able to access the shares over SMB.  A reboot of the server fixes the issue.

As per a KB article I removed nod antivirus from the server to rule out a conflicting filter mode driver after the second fault.  Sadly yesterday it happened again.

The only relevant errors in the servers log files are:

SMB Server Event ID 551

SMB Session Authentication Failure Client Name: \\192.168.105.79 Client Address: 192.168.105.79:50774 User Name: HHS\H6-08$ Session ID: 0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF Status: Insufficient server resources exist to complete the request. (0xC0000205) Guidance: You should expect this error when attempting to connect to shares using incorrect credentials. This error does not always indicate a problem with authorization, but mainly authentication. It is more common with non-Windows clients. This error can occur when using incorrect usernames and passwords with NTLM, mismatched LmCompatibility settings between client and server, duplicate Kerberos service principal names, incorrect Kerberos ticket-granting service tickets, or Guest accounts without Guest access enabled

and

SMB Server event ID 1020
File system operation has taken longer than expected.

Client Name: \\192.168.105.97
Client Address: 192.168.105.97:49571
User Name: HHS\12J.Champion
Session ID: 0x2C07B40004A5
Share Name: \\*\Subjects
File Name:
Command: 5
Duration (in milliseconds): 176784
Warning Threshold (in milliseconds): 120000

Guidance:

The underlying file system has taken too long to respond to an operation. This typically indicates a problem with the storage and not SMB.

I have checked the underlying disk/iscsi/network hyper-v cluster for any other errors or issues, but as far as I can tell everything is fine.

Is it possible that something else is left over from the NOD antivirus installation?

Looking for suggestions on how to troubleshoot this further.

Thanks

Folder Redirection Group Policy change not applying to all users on all computers

I have had Folder Redirection (Documents, Pictures, Music, Videos, and Favorites) working fine for years now in an environment with a 2008 file server (no DFS) and mixed Vista/Win7 clients.  I recently moved the top-level share for the redirected folders to a different 2008 R2 server and simpyl changed the servername in the GPO accordingly.

The issue is that not every existing user profile on every machine will pick up the change.  I have been logging in to 8 different machines with five different user accounts and cannot find a pattern.  On the clients that were recently in-place upgraded from Vista Business to Win7 Pro, a couple of accounts get the new setting but most accounts do not.  On the clients that are clean installs of Win7, most accounts get the new settings but some do not.

I have tried checking "Enforced" for the GPO, I have tried running GPUpdate /force and rebooting.  I have tried editing the shell folders entries in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer and rebooting.  It doesn't make sense.  Both the new and old UNC share paths are accessible from a run command for the affected users.  I have the option to "Grant user exclusive rights to Documents" de-selected in the GPO.

If I delete the user profile, then it picks up the right settings but that's not a pretty option when we're talking about 25 users who roam around and use 25 different computers randomly.  To fix it that way reliably I would have to wipe out everyone's profile on every machine and possibly restore documents from backup.  Any other ideas?

Weird behavior with ReFS?

$

If I try to create a file with "ÿ" character in ReFS filesystem inside any folder through Explorer then it says "Folder or file does not exist" ??

I create a file and try to rename it with character(ÿ) then it gives this error. "Folder or file does not exist" in  ReFS.

and after that if you go to previous folder and then go inside again in folder it shows you the file.

and if you open this file then it says this file does not exist do you want to create it.

but everything works successfully in NTFS.

Steps :

1.Lets say you have volume D with Refs formatted. (I tried on 2012 R2 and windows 8.1)

2.you go inside and create one file say random.dat

3. try to rename it (replace "random" with "ÿ" so you will make like ÿ.dat)

4. Now it gives "Folder or file does not exist"

5. Now if you are not seeing this file then open new window and go inside volume D.

6. Now you will see this file ÿ.dat

7. open with notepad now it will say "this file does not exist do you want to create"

8. now you say ok lets create.

9. Write some data inside that fille and close it.

10. now right click on file and see properties you will not be seeing create time and all and no allocation size.

Refs create problem only with this character (ÿ,ascii value = 255). why ??

Is there any limitation??

And if you will use this character with any other character then we can create file , works fine.

why this weird behavior with Refs.?

It seems like bug in ReFS.

I have asked at lot of place but not getting proper reply from microsoft.

DFS Path Check

I am trying to using Powershell to remote into each one of our DFS server to check path via UNC to verify all servers are working locally.  The script I have sometimes works and sometimes fails.  When it does fail, I would logon the failed server and run test-path and it shows as okay.   Not sure what's wrong with the check,

Invoke-Command -ComputerName "SERVER-DFS01" -ScriptBlock {Test-Path \\test.local\team}

I then tried the following formatting with same result.... works for few days or week until reboot and continues to be broken just like the above,

Invoke-Command -ComputerName "SERVER-DFS01" -ScriptBlock {Test-Path -Path:$using:sharecheck.DFSPath}
